Girona Gravel

Girona will forever have a special place in my heart, and will be one of my favourite places I’ve had the chance to spend some time. For context I went solo for the month of June. I didn’t know anyone there but was quickly welcomed by the amazing community of cyclists there, and truly never wanted to leave. The town of Girona is hilariously small with not much to do other than drink coffee, eat treats, and ride your bike with the amazing people there.

I went on far too many cool rides here to share about all of them so I will share about one particular ride with my friend Millie. I met Millie on this day? I think? I may need to fact check this with her. We had been chatting over Instagram for awhile and finally got to meet. We became instant goofy, best buds. The kind of person you meet and instantly know it’s a friend-match. I understand how risky it could be messaging pretty much a complete stranger to go on a 200km+ bike ride with you in 40+ degree temperatures. But gosh am I happy I did it.

Off we went, for a 200km loop leaving from Girona and circumventing around the Cadeques. A large portion of the Traka 360 route. I lost count of how many cold beverage stops we made, but it was a hot, HOT day. The hottest temps my training peaks has ever recorded (47 degrees). While a hard, and very long day. It was one of my favourite days I’ve ever had riding my bike. Full of adventure, so many snacks, laughs, seeing new things, and meeting new people. I learned that an iced cold Aquarius was Millie's go to beverage, and she learned that Nestea was mine. If you go to Girona in search of a fun gravel adventure - this route could be it. Just be forewarned the end is a bit whacky. Couldn’t tell you how to re-route it so consider yourself warned if you find yourself bushwhacking after having just cycled 200km.

If you’ve been thinking about taking yourself on a solo adventure or vacation take this as a sign to do it. Take the adventure! I promise its worth it.
